Contoura Vision

The First Topography-Guided Personalized LASIK Procedure

Since its FDA-approval in the early 1990s, LASIK has helped millions of men and women worldwide enjoy freedom from their glasses & contacts.  In fact, LASIK has become the safest and most popular laser vision correction procedure ever performed in medicine.

At Rush Eye Associates, we’ve been helping set the LASIK standard in Texas since the 1990s. This includes building Texas’ very first Laser Center for Vision dedicated entirely to laser vision correction procedures like LASIK. During that the past few decades, Rush Eye Associates has been on the leading edge of laser technology and advanced diagnostics used to measure vision pre-operatively and determine candidacy.

One of the greatest breakthroughs in LASIK in the past 5 years has been the introduction of Contoura Vision LASIK. Unlike other LASIK procedures, Contoura Vision is a topography-guided laser treatment that improves upon traditional LASIK by using an imaging device called a Topolyzer. It is the newest, most advanced method of laser vision correction approved by the FDA for vision correction.

The main difference between Contoura Vision and other LASIK procedures is in the preoperative diagnostics and planning. The Topolyzer maps the unique topography of the surface of the cornea sampling approximately 22,000 points. This information is then used to smooth out any irregularities on the cornea.

Contoura Vision is the first refractive laser procedure to receive FDA-approval for topography-guided LASIK and was developed by Alcon, the global leader in eye care and a division of Novartis. Rush Eye Associates is proud to be the first ophthalmologist in the Panhandle to perform topography-guided LASIK.

Since its many clinical trials, Contoura Vision has redefined the standard practice terminology of “quality of vision.” In 2019, over 690,000 LASIK procedures were performed in the U.S.

In one US-based clinical trial, 92.6% of eyes that received topography-guided LASIK treatment achieved 20/20 vision or better. The procedure also showed statistically significant reductions in some of the visual symptoms associated with LASIK, such as glare, light sensitivity, difficulty driving at night, and trouble while reading.

Contoura Vision is performed with Alcon’s WaveLight Allegretto Wave Eye-Q or WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser Systems, in conjunction with the WaveLight Topolyzer Vario Diagnostic Device.
