YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Modern-day cataract surgery at Rush Eye Associates involves removing the cloudy interior contents of the crystalline lens while leaving the clear outer membrane known as the “capsule”.

The capsule is intentionally left in intact in order to maintain the intraocular lens implant in the proper position. Over time, the capsule is prone to clouding and is referred to as a posterior capsular opacification. This can occur at any time from months to decades after the time of the original cataract surgery.

In early stages, it may not have any impact on the vision. But in more advanced stages, you will experience blurring of the vision. A simple laser treatment called a YAG Laser Capsulotomy is performed to create an opening through this cloudy film to help restore vision. It usually takes less than 60 seconds to perform and can be done at our facility.
