Dr. J Avery Rush, Emeritus
J. Avery Rush, M.D. is the founder emeritus of Rush Eye Associates. He graduated medical school from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, followed by residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. With a tradition of eye care excellence that spans more than 40 years, Dr. Rush is considered a pioneer in the field of vision correction. He was the first surgeon in the Texas Panhandle region to offer patients the benefits of LASIK, which has become the safest and most popular vision correction procedure ever developed. Dr. Avery also co-founded the state-of-the-art Laser Center for Vision, the first free-standing, privately owned laser vision correction center in the state of Texas.

Dr. Rush helped set the standard in LASIK and allowed for thousands of people to enjoy clearer, more natural vision.
Dr. Avery’s son, Dr. Sloan W. Rush, joined the team to form Rush Eye Associates, paving the way for the introduction of the most innovative refractive surgery and cataract surgical techniques. Dr. Sloan now runs the practice, carrying on the Rush tradition of excellence.
In addition to founding Rush Eye Associates, Dr. Avery was a frequent short-term missionary ophthalmologist, having been a vital member of multiple cataract surgery teams. He has been on over 20 medical missions all over Latin America and has performed in excess of 2,500 cataract surgeries during these campaigns. He is blessed with 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
Dr. Avery is a Board Certified Fellow with the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
